What types of sneaker socks are there?

Wat voor sneakersokken zijn er?

Sneaker socks are low socks mainly worn in sneakers or low shoes. These socks leave your ankles visible. For sports activities, thick ankle socks are often used. Sneaker socks feel like men's socks without the ankle part. Sneaker socks are also called ankle socks, but the band is located around or just above the ankle.

Ankle socks are smaller than regular men's socks, and therefore lighter. Because the ankle sock leaves your ankle visible, the socks are also considerably colder when the wind blows or in a cold environment. The elastic band does not leave a mark on your ankle: the socks usually have a good fit. But what kinds of men's and women's sneaker socks can be distinguished?

Casual socks

Under less traditional outfits, you can wear casual socks. These socks are designed for comfort, not tradition. Nowadays, these comfortable socks are becoming more and more fashionable; they have become a common sight. There are various casual socks available. Casual socks are distinguished by often using a higher percentage of cotton. For example, the Casual ankle socks from SOLIT contain 80%(!) cotton (2% more than the 'normal' socks).

No-show socks

Invisible socks (‘invisible socks’ in Dutch), or ‘no-show socks’, are very low ankle socks. Invisible socks are so low that they do not rise above the shoe. This makes it look as if you are not wearing any socks at all. These socks only cover your sole, toes, and heel. Most invisible socks have a gel pad in the heel that prevents the sock from slipping off; for this reason, these socks are also called 'grip socks'. Did you know?: Slipping ankle socks are one of the biggest sock annoyances. SOLIT prevents this with a renewed band that keeps the sneaker socks in place.

You wear invisible socks best with casual outfits, for example with sneakers. Invisible socks give a casual, summery look to your outfit. No-show socks are also very suitable when you want a summery look. We advise against invisible socks for business occasions. In most cases, your ankle should be covered at business events.

Sports socks

Sports socks are thick cotton socks with strong elastic, which are wear-resistant and absorb a lot of sweat. (Troubled by sweaty feet? Read here how to prevent sweaty feet!) These are very strong socks, specially developed for the athlete. Because of these properties, sports socks are very comfortable. The most well-known are, of course, the white sports socks. These socks are coming back into fashion. Both high and low in the shoe.

For every sport, special socks are available. For example, socks for skiing, running, and walking. All these socks offer extra protection and comfort during sports. Furthermore, the socks breathe better due to the use of special materials such as bamboo. Good sports socks are therefore an important part of your sports outfit.

Seamless socks – the luxury variant

True seamless socks do not exist. This is because socks are woven on a cylinder; the end of the sock must always be secured to prevent a hole at both ends. The cheapest way to do this is to turn the sock inside out and machine stitch it. The seam must always be finished at the ends, so there is always a small thickening at the ends.

It is possible to make the seam much finer by hand-stitching the sock closed. This is a precision job done by hand. This is called a 'hand-linked' seam.
