Saving water can be done in many different ways, but with socks? At first glance, a choice that does not seem to make much difference: should I go for cotton or bamboo socks? However, if you look deeper into these two options, you will see that these raw materials, besides the benefits of bamboo, also differ greatly in production. The production of 1 kg of bamboo socks saves 7000 liters of water compared to cotton socks. A saving of about 50 bathtubs per KG of SOLIT socks!
Save 7,000 liters of water?
Cotton requires 10,000 liters of water to produce 1 kg of usable material. Bamboo, on the other hand, is a material that can be made ready for use with 3,000 liters of water. Still not a small amount of water, but what an enormous saving! Consider what all that water could be used for.
This is partly because bamboo naturally only needs sun and rainwater to grow and therefore does not need extra watering. With a natural amount of water, bamboo can grow into a mature and usable plant. Cotton, on the other hand, is a raw material that requires more care. To produce 1 kg of cotton socks, the raw material alone requires 7 times (!) as much water.
Advantages of bamboo socks
What do we notice about the raw materials in practice? Bamboo socks feel comfortable. The fabric drapes smoothly and feels silky soft. This is due to the round surface of the bamboo fibers. So, high wearing comfort! Do you have sensitive skin or suffer from allergies? Then bamboo underwear is perfect! Bamboo is hypoallergenic. Do you suffer from sweaty feet in socks? The tiny holes in the bamboo fiber ensure that moisture is absorbed and evaporates faster. Bamboo absorbs up to 70% more moisture than cotton.
Are bamboo socks also more advantageous than cotton socks in summer? In summer, bamboo works cooling and in winter it is warmer than cotton. The open structure of the fibers causes this. Bamboo is also naturally UV-protective and filters 98% of harmful UV rays. The environmental impact during bamboo production is up to 80% less than with cotton. So by wearing bamboo basics, you are acting more sustainably. Especially when there is extreme drought in summer!
Why still cotton socks then?
Cotton remains a good choice if the wearing comfort feels better than bamboo socks. The combination of elastane and cotton provides both a strong fabric and a perfect fit. Because bamboo is naturally very strong, our products remain beautiful even after frequent washing! Despite the softness, cotton fibers are almost as strong, which means the cotton socks have a long lifespan. The fabric does not crease, is antistatic, shape-retaining, and can simply be machine washed.
